This impressive Copeland (Spode) parian sculpture, titled “STORM”, is based on an 1858 model by the noted Scottish sculptor William Brodie, ARSA, SC. Cast in luminous parian, a type of bisque porcelain developed to emulate carved marble, the sculpture depicts a young woman bracing herself against the wind, her garments swept dramatically around her figure. The effect captures both movement and mood, giving the piece a dynamic sculptural presence.
Standing 18.5 inches high and measuring 6.25 inches wide by 6.25 inches deep, the figure is beautifully modeled with finely rendered drapery and expressive detail. The crisp definition of the folds, the delicate treatment of the face, and the naturalistic pose all illustrate the high standard of Copeland’s parian production in the mid-19th century. The piece is fully stamped, confirming its authenticity and period. Weighing approximately 5 pounds, it has a substantial yet graceful feel, making it well suited as a statement piece in home décor settings such as mantels, consoles, bookcases, or curated display shelves.Good antique condition, no chips or damage. There is a line on the inside of the base. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
About the Artist
William Brodie (1815–1881) was a distinguished Scottish sculptor, elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (ARSA). Known for his refined portrait busts, public monuments, and idealized figures, Brodie worked in both marble and bronze. His designs were admired for their naturalism and gentle emotive quality—traits clearly reflected in Storm. His compositions were popular choices for adaptation into parian by leading Victorian porcelain manufacturers.
An elegant and collectible example of Victorian neoclassical sculpture, this Copeland parian figure combines artistic pedigree, historical interest, and decorative appeal.
