Beautiful American ladies’ rocking chair from the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890–1915) featuring original cane work, turned spindles, and the classic silhouette associated with Victorian–Edwardian transitional design.
The frame is solid hardwood, likely oak or ash, with its original dark antique brown stain; a warm deep brown with subtle reddish undertones. The finish has been gently revived using denatured alcohol and a light wax, preserving the original patina rather than refinishing it.
Both the cane seat and cane back are original. The seat cane has one small break visible only from the underside. Carved decorative elements remain intact, including the pierced back ornament and front apron motif; one small front applique is slightly loose, a common non-structural age trait and easily restorable if desired.
Structurally, the chair is solid and stable with a smooth, even rocking motion. The original hardware is still present, including the mismatched screw count on the arms, typical of hand-fitted American factory production of the era.
Condition Notes
• Structurally sound; smooth rocker
• Original cane seat/back; small underside break in seat cane
• Loose decorative front applique (cosmetic)
• Small veneer chip and stable age crack on top rail
• Surface wear consistent with age
• Finish cleaned and waxed (not stripped or refinished)
Suggested Use
A standout piece for a reading nook, nursery, entryway, or any vintage-inspired interior. Small, charming, and full of antique character.
