The originals are stone lithographs from George Catlin's famous and incredibly rare "North American Indian Portfolio" which was first published in 1844. The original stone lithographs (if you can locate one for sale) are priced at thousands of dollars each. Catlin spent eight years among 48 Indian tribes in preparation.This print is from the 1970 limited edition portfolio. Lower quality reproductions are available but do not compare to the limited edition portfolio published by The Swallow Press/Sage Books in 1970 in an edition limited to 1000 copies. This set is from # 130. Even under magnification the prints from the 1970 portfolio compare most favorably to the originals. Outstanding detail and all are in excellent condition. George Catlin American Painter (1796-1872)
George Catlin was an American lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the American frontier. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians.
