A striking and meticulously rendered example of 19th-century heraldic artistry, this hand-drawn and hand-colored armorial coat of arms dates to circa 1890 and is presented in its original period wood frame. The crest features a classical escutcheon (shield) form, beautifully illustrated in gauche paint with fine pen work and vibrant pigments that remain vivid more than a century later. The central shield is silver-toned metallic with a stylized grapevine, its curling tendrils bearing clusters of dark grapes and lush green leaves—symbolic of abundance, prosperity, and perhaps a nod to viticulture or fruitful enterprise. Flanking the base of the vine are two birds rendered in a rich russet hue—likely martlets or similar heraldic birds, which can represent continuous effort or noble lineage.
Above the shield rests a twisted torse in blue and silver, supporting the crest proper: a disembodied arm issuing from the torse and grasping a bunch of grapes. This imagery reinforces the symbolism of cultivation, reward through effort, and possibly hospitality or trade. The banner below the shield bears the Latin motto "Robur Dura Vincere Poscit", which roughly translates to “Strength demands hard challenges to overcome”—a powerful affirmation of resilience and perseverance.
The overall piece measures 15 inches high by 12 inches wide and 0.75 inches deep, while the central artwork itself measures approximately 8.75 inches high by 5.75 inches wide. The paper shows some light foxing. The wooden frame, original to the piece, has a warm patina and a simple, elegant profile that enhances the artwork without distracting from its intricate detail. Good antiques condition with age appropriate wear, some losses to the decorative veneer overlay on frame. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
An exceptional display piece, ideal for adding heritage charm to a study, library, or office. A fine addition for collectors of heraldry, genealogical artifacts, or Victorian-era art.
