A truly magnificent example of late Victorian craftsmanship, this large desk stationery and correspondence box is as practical as it is beautiful. Made circa 1880 by the esteemed firm Clark of Bond Street, London, the box boasts a sophisticated exterior of rich black Moroccan leather, accented by elegant brass hardware, including a top-mounted carry handle and front lock (no key present).
Opening the lid reveals a sumptuous interior lined in deep green Moroccan leather, adorned with gilded brass corners and robust hinges. The upper lid features a wonderfully compartmentalized section for letters, documents, and writing instruments—perfect for the Victorian-era correspondent. A lift-out tray with various storage compartments sits above a generous open space beneath, offering two levels of smart organization.
Measures 13.5 inches wide, 9.5 inches deep and 6.5 inches high. Weighs 8 pounds. Good antique condition, light signs of wear and handling to exterior leather. The interior tray is missing a piece of leather in the lower right corner exposing the wood underneath. The interior lid locking place has been removed, this box will not be able to be locked. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A Delightful Bonus:
Included with this box are several handsome leather desk accessories found with it—among them a small leather blotter, stamp case, and a pair of fine scissors housed in a beautifully stitched leather sheath. One item bears the Asprey name, another high-end British maker, and may have been added later. Intriguingly, the scissors retain an old estate tag referencing actress Audrey Meadows. While we cannot verify if the entire lot came from her estate, the association adds a layer of Hollywood mystique.
Whether displayed on a writing desk, library shelf, or executive office, it radiates history, elegance, and the quiet dignity of a bygone age.
