Hélène Girod de l'Ain was a French Postwar & Contemporary painter known for her figure paintings, portraits, and still life works. She studied art at the prestigious L'École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris. She exhibited her work at several prominent venues, including the French Artist Society, the Salon de Paris, the National Society of Independent Artists, and L'École des Beaux Arts. Her style is often described as French Impressionist or Postwar & Contemporary, with her works featuring subjects such as girls reading, figures on the beach, and floral arrangements. Girod de l'Ain's paintings have been offered at auction numerous times, achieving a wide range of prices. Her works are held in private collections and have been sold through major auction houses, including Christie's.
Hélène Girod De L'Ain was born in 1926 and grew up during the 1950s and was influenced by the artistic atmosphere of the time. During the Post War period, New York City became the international focus for Modernism. During the Second World War, many artists had made their way to the city after having fled in exile from Europe, which culminated in a merging and amalgamation of abilities and ideas. Whilst in New York, influential Europeans such as Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers and Hans Hoffmann provided inspiration for American artists, and influenced cultural development in the United States for many subsequent decades. Influential artists of this period included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb. In later revisions, the contributions and efforts of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois have been recognised, amongst many other female creatives.
She died in 1966 .
