This French oak panel depicts the pious Saint Nicholas, who was known for secret gift giving, which directly led to the folklore of Santa Claus. Nicholas of Bari, as he was sometimes called, was the patron saint of children (among others), which has been conceptualized in the fine carvings, in the form of three children in a barrel next to St. Nicholas.
