Notre-Dame de Paris — Victor Hugo (1930) | Limited Editions Club | Signed by Frans Masereel | 2-Volume Set
A distinguished and early Limited Editions Club publication, this 1930 two-volume set of Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo was printed in Paris by R. Coulouma and features striking woodcut illustrations by Frans Masereel, one of the most influential woodcut artists of the 20th century.
Volume II is numbered and signed by Masereel (No. 1070 of 1500 copies), while Volume I is unsigned as issued. The translation is by Jessie Haynes, accompanied by a critical introduction from noted scholar Andrew Lang.
The set retains its original tan paper wrappers, each decorated with a depiction of Notre Dame. Interiors are clean, featuring numerous uncut pages, with expected age toning, spotting, and light wear to the wraps—including spine wear and a small corner loss to Volume II—consistent with a well-preserved antique softcover edition.
This edition represents one of the Limited Editions Club’s earliest fine press productions, highly regarded for its expressive Masereel illustrations and its Parisian craftsmanship. It remains a coveted acquisition for collectors of rare literature, illustrated books, and fine European printing.
Hugo’s monumental 1831 novel stands as one of the great achievements of Romantic historical fiction—celebrated for its unforgettable characters and its sweeping portrait of medieval Paris beneath the towers of Notre Dame.
