This nicely detailed antique 19th century spelter cast metal statue represents Pericles, the great Athenian statesman, general, and orator of the Golden Age of Athens. The figure is beautifully hand-painted, with soft blue and white tones highlighting the folds of his classical draped robe, lending a lifelike depth to the casting.
Pericles stands in a dignified contrapposto pose, embodying both strength and wisdom. In his right hand, he holds a laurel wreath, a universal symbol of honor, victory, and civic achievement in Ancient Greece. In his left hand, he grasps a scroll, symbolizing learning, statesmanship, and his enduring legacy as a patron of democracy, philosophy, and the arts. His head is slightly inclined, as though in thoughtful reflection, emphasizing his role as a visionary leader. The base is inscribed with his name, PERICLES, grounding the work in its historical significance.
The statue measures 10.75 inches high, 4.5 inches wide, and 4.5 inches deep, with a solid weight of 3 pounds, giving it an impressive presence despite its modest scale. Good antique condition with signs of wear and handling, areas of paint loss. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
About Pericles (c. 495–429 BCE):
Pericles was one of the most influential figures of Classical Athens, remembered as the architect of Athenian democracy and the guiding force behind its cultural and political dominance in the 5th century BCE. Under his leadership, Athens flourished in art, architecture, and philosophy, giving rise to what historians call the Golden Age of Athens. He championed public works projects, including the building of the Parthenon, fostered intellectual pursuits, and strengthened democratic institutions. His statesmanship left a legacy that shaped Western political and cultural thought for centuries.
This statue is not only a antique collectible but also a distinctive home décor accent. With its classical elegance and scholarly symbolism, it makes a statement on a bookshelf, mantle, desk, or display cabinet. Ideal for lovers of history, philosophy, or neoclassical style, this piece adds a touch of sophistication and cultural depth to any interior.
