Original Old Antique French Animalier Bronze Frog Sculpture c.1850 – Parisian Workshop – Modelled in the Manner of Moigniez • Natural Patina • 19th Century
Description
A finely cast mid-19th-century French bronze frog, produced in a Parisian workshop circa 1850. This charming small sculpture reflects the naturalistic animalier tradition associated with artists such as Fratin, Barye, and Jules Moigniez. Modelled in the manner of Moigniez, it displays soft, rounded contours and a lifelike sense of movement characteristic of the Parisian school.
As typical for workshop bronzes of this era, the piece is unsigned, yet the craftsmanship clearly reflects French production of the period.
Cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) technique, the frog has developed a rich, naturally aged patina in deep brown and olive, with warmer highlights from generations of handling. The underside retains the original casting vent hole—correct and expected for mid-19th-century Parisian work.
Bronzes of this type were widely collected during the period, including by William T. Walters, whose important collection helped shape connoisseurship in French animalier sculpture.
A wonderfully tactile and weighty object, ideal for collectors of antique bronzes and distinctive 19th-century decorative pieces.
