Besides providing ashtrays in hotels, bars and restaurants, matches were offered and matchbox stands were once a common sight in luxury locations.
This is the perfect historic matchbox holder or table ashtray. Overall it's in good condition, with some noticeable wear to the silver layer, but the silver finish still shines nicely.
An advertisement for Wiskemann (Brussels) is pictured on both sides. Around the base, it reads the cafe name from which it came - CAFE ANGLAIS LIEGE - in Liege, Belgium.

Café Anglais
At first it was a restaurant for coachmen and servants. Later, it was also frequented by popular actors and actresses. It was opened in 1802 by François Georges Delaunay (1768-1849), a native of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives (Normandy), who gave it this name in honor of the Amiens peace treaty signed this year- there with England. The Delaunays left the Café Anglais for good in 1836.
It was the arrival of chef Adolphe Dugléré that made it one of the best restaurants in Paris. By the end of the Second Empire, it was the most posh of all cafes and the most popular in all of Europe.
The restaurant disappeared in 1913
So this lovely little thing can be dated to the period from 1802 to 1913. See less
