A handsome set of 19th-century English oak dining chairs, crafted in a style evocative of 17th-century design and construction. Made from solid oak, these chairs carry the weight, presence, and craftsmanship that define early English furniture, while offering the charm and individuality characteristic of later rural workshops.
Each chair features a beautifully carved arched backrest adorned with a classic lunette motif and a delightful mustachioed chap’s face—no two exactly alike. The subtle differences in expression reveal the humor and playfulness of the carver, adding a spirited human touch rarely found in modern pieces.
The seats are upholstered in supple leather, each panel secured with metal tacks that lend a rugged, traditional finish. The leather has faded to varying degrees over time, softening and mellowing in a way that deepens the character of the set and harmonizes beautifully with the warm oak.
Rich in personality and steeped in history, these chairs were hand selected in England and imported with care—chosen for their craftsmanship, charm, and the irresistible individuality of each carved face. They bring not only utility but also story, wit, and presence to any dining space.
The measurements for the two host armchairs are 21.5"w x 21"d x 40"h with a seat height of 18.5", seat width of 21" and an armrest height of 27"

The solid oak frames remain sturdy and stable, with honest surface marks, softening to the edges, and areas of rubbing that speak to long and careful use. The carved arched backrests retain their charm, with the lunettes and mustachioed faces showing subtle wear that enhances their personality and underscores the hand-carved nature of the work. The leather seats are supple and intact, displaying varying degrees of fading and tonal change from chair to chair—natural aging that adds warmth, depth, and individuality to the set. The metal tacks are secure, with mild tarnish appropriate to their age. Overall, the chairs are comfortable, well-balanced, and beautifully seasoned—rich in patina and full of the lived-in character that defines authentic antique English furniture. less
