Stunning 1950s multi-tiered "Mesa" coffee table after the iconic design by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings (c. 1952). This phenomenal piece is made from Walnut veneered wood forming a "pebble" outline, with two conforming graduated upper end sections positioned on an inset base. Acquired from the original owner, who was gifted the table in Beverly Hills, CA between 1952-1959. Please note this is an unauthenticated piece, as the underside does not have the 'Widdicomb designed by T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings' label or model number stamp present; The age, origin and construction suggest the possibility it could be an early prototype or floor sample, but this has not been confirmed. Well maintained by original owner, it is in very good, near mint condition with some very minor surface indentations/imperfections (pictured).
The T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings Mesa table is an iconic piece of American mid-century modern design, characterized by its massive, freeform organic shape inspired by the topography of the American Southwest. Released in 1952 by John Widdicomb Furniture, its biomorphic form was inspired by aerial views of New Mexico's mesa lands, and stood in stark contrast to the boxy lines of contemporary modernism. While embodying an informal aesthetic, the table was a luxury item, made with labor-intensive craftsmanship using American Walnut veneer with finishes like blonde or amber-brown "Sienna".
A highly sought-after and valuable collector's item, some of the few Mesa tables in existence today are featured in the Yale University Museum of Art and in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Decorative Art, further cementing the table as a museum-worthy object of American design history.
