Summary
Powerful carved hardwood lion sculpture with a rich dark finish and expressive, open-mouthed snarl. The long, low stance and finely detailed mane give the piece real presence on a console, credenza, or bookshelf.
Dating and Background
Likely mid 20th century, c. 1950–1970. The lion is carved from a dense tropical hardwood often described as rosewood, with a deep brown-black surface and subtle reddish figuring visible along the flanks and back. Well-carved animal figures of this scale were popular decorator pieces in the mid-century period, produced in skilled workshops for export and for tasteful interiors.
Collector Notes
At over sixteen inches long and weighing around four and a half pounds, this is a substantial carving rather than a small souvenir. The sculptor has emphasized the lion’s movement and musculature, with a sinuous tail and powerful shoulders leading into a dramatic, layered mane. The open jaws and carved teeth add to the sense of motion and character. Collectors of animalier sculpture, mid-century decor, and global design will find this a versatile and impressive example.
Decorating Ideas
Perfect as a focal object on a credenza, console, or etagere. The deep, almost ebony tone looks superb against lighter woods, lacquer, stone, or linen. Style it in front of stacked books, next to a modern lamp, or as a counterpoint to contemporary art. Its horizontal profile also works well on a mantel or the front edge of a desk.
Dimensions
Height 7 inches
Width 16 1/2 inches
Depth 3 1/2 inches
Condition
Very good vintage condition. Surface shows light rubbing and patina to the mane and high points, with minor scattered scuffs and small areas of wear to the paw tips and along the flanks. A thin line along one side follows the natural grain and aging of the hardwood. No breaks or repairs observed; presents beautifully.
