Dating and Background
Likely mid 20th century, c. 1950–1970. The lion is carved from a dense tropical hardwood often described as rosewood, with a deep brown-black surface and subtle reddish figuring visible along the flanks and back. Well-carved animal figures of this scale were popular decorator pieces in the mid-century period, produced in skilled workshops for export and for tasteful interiors.

At over sixteen inches long and weighing around four and a half pounds, this is a substantial carving rather than a small souvenir.
