Fascinating Japanese 19th century Edo period six-panel Rakuchu Rakugai folding byobu screen featuring scenes in and around the capitol Kyoto, Japan. This type of non-commissioned screen has been popular as a gift from the capital. Each panel has an applied scene with a label over a gold leaf ground. The labels are Imperial Palace (Dairi), Temple (Hokoji), Temple (Kiyomizu), Shrine (Yasaka), Inari, and Yoshida. The scenes depict figures engaged in leisurely activities amid pagodas and pavilions with dramatic mountains and hills in mint green tones. The paintings still have vibrant tones of natural pigment colors on handmade paper embellished with gold flecks throughout. Interesting work with historical and cultural significance in Kyoto. The screen is set in a later ebonized wood frame with a silk brocade border. Well preserved with a lovely aged patina as seen in photos. From an estate in Beverly Hills, California.
