This print is post-1938 and part of Oerder’s Chrysanthemum series. In this study, Oerder captured the brilliance of the chrysanthemums by focusing his brush on the intensity of the cadmium yellow. The multiple blooms and striking highlights create a well-balanced piece. The background, filled with earthy and natural tones blended with an indistinct background conveys both movement and depth.

About the artist:
Oerder was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands and studied art at the Rotterdam Academy as well as under Ernest Blanc-Garin in Brussels, before moving to Pretoria in 1890. He worked briefly for the Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg Maatschappij (NZASM) and later taught art at the Staatsmeisjesskool, which became Pretoria Girls High School. Returned to the Netherlands in 1908 and married flower painter Gerda Pitlo. Then in 1938 he returned to Pretoria where they settled and he continued painting flower studies, still lifes, official portraits, and landscapes based on his travels across the country.His wife’s influence as a flower painter remained an inspiration and in later years he derived much joy in painting his own flower studies.
