Depicts a woman in a black evening gown, leaning against a table by a yellow couch, as she contemplates a note in her hand. Signed P.D. Erikon (?) lower right. Gilt composite frame, ornately molded with scalloped corners and foliate designs.

"Auguste Toulmouche was a French painter known for his luxurious genre paintings of upper middle class Parisian women in domestic scenes. His work is associated with the academic realist movement. Born in 1829 in Nantes, France, he passed away in 1890 in Paris, France. He was honored as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for his contributions to art. Toulmouche's peers included Alfred Stevens, Carolus-Duran, and Claude Monet, and he was influenced by Charles Gleyre. His works are exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Louvre, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, and the Musée d'Arts de Nantes." (Artnet)
