Recently discovered in a chateau in Nice, France, this pair of giltwood carvings from the 1700s has been mounted more recently on painted black iron stands, giving them a total height of 39 ¾ inches. There are subtle differences in the carvings, but the forms and themes are constant. At the top of each carving is a flamboyant acanthus leaf with a whorled center that gives the carvings a sense of movement and life. Under the acanthus leaf, the main body expands, embellished with a series of C-scrolls, ballflowers, and recessed geometric carvings.
Asymmetry was prevalent throughout furniture and art from the 1700s, as evidenced by these impressive carvings. Originally part of a larger installation, our 18th-century giltwood carvings would make wonderful accessories for a table, mantel, or niche.
