Joppa is a contemporary folk artist whose creative work includes the use of piano components and finishes learned from the restoration of pianos, his "day job".
Joppa has shown his work joyfully and has been received by a growing group of collectors and benefactors. Starting slowly, with those for whom he restored an instrument, and gaining exposure at local galleries. The work is subdued and nuanced, such as the use of piano strings that can no longer serve their intended purpose, and forming kinetic sculptures. Or hand-lacquering piano lids that were removed from pianos whose life was long and lovely, but coming to an end.
The work references the past, with a hand-pieced collage made from 1369 cut rectangles of sandpaper set into a black lacquered frame. The sandpaper pieces are adhered with a natural and traditional adhesive used in fine woodworking and piano restoration. The result is a truly Modern piece of art created by a self-taught Folk Artist that would be an intriguing focal point of any collection.
