A striking hand-carved wooden ceremonial mask originating from the Kandingai Village in the Middle Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. These traditional masks, rich in symbolism and tribal artistry, were not intended to be worn but rather displayed inside or outside men’s ceremonial houses (Haus Tambaran) as spiritual guardians.
Intricately carved from a single piece of hardwood, the mask features deeply incised geometric and organic motifs accentuated with natural pigments in earthy tones of red, black, and brown. The expressive facial features — including hollowed eyes inlaid with cowrie shells and a prominent nose — embody ancestral spirits believed to protect the community and connect the physical and spiritual worlds. A carved zoomorphic figure atop the mask, possibly a bird from the region or spirit creature, further enhances its ritual significance.
A beautiful example of Sepik River artistry, this mask demonstrates both cultural depth and sculptural power, making it an exceptional piece for collectors of ethnographic or tribal art.
