This extraordinary piece of custom-made art features three original circa 1905 ceramic tiles crafted by the renowned English manufacturer H & R Johnson Ltd. These stunning tiles showcase vibrant floral designs inspired by the flowing, nature-driven motifs of the Art Nouveau movement.
Mounted in a solid dark wood frame, the tiles are beautifully presented as a statement wall piece, blending antique elegance with timeless artistry. Adding to its charm, the frame’s open-back design allows a view of the reverse side, where the manufacturer’s stamps and details are visible—a unique feature that will delight collectors and enthusiasts of historical craftsmanship. The decoration of floral motifs is embossed by dust-press technique in which clay powder is compressed under high pressure in a mould.
H & R Johnson Ltd was a renowned English tile manufacturer based at Highgate Tileworks in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, a hub of the ceramics industry. Founded in 1901, the company gained a reputation for producing high-quality ceramic tiles, combining innovative techniques with traditional craftsmanship. Throughout the 20th century, H & R Johnson became a leader in tile design, serving both domestic and international markets. Their work was known for its durability and aesthetic appeal, often featured in architectural projects ranging from residential spaces to commercial buildings. In 1968, H & R Johnson Ltd merged with Richards Tiles Ltd to form the Johnson Tiles brand, which continues to operate as one of the UK's leading tile manufacturers.
The frame measures 24.25 inches wide, 10 inches high, and 1.25 inches deep. Total weight is 7 pounds. The tiles are in good condition with age related crazing. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
This one-of-a-kind creation is perfect for adding sophistication and character to any living room, study, or entryway.
