Henry Martin Gasser (AMERICAN / NEW JERSEY, 1909 - 1981) pair of pencil landscape studies on paper. Each signed. Mounted in matching black painted wooden frames with mat under glass.
Henry Gasser (1869-1920) was an American Impressionist painter known for his urban life scenes and landscapes. Gasser was born in New York in 1869. He began studying with William Merritt Chase at age 16. Gasser also trained at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. In 1889, Gasser went to Paris to continue his art education. He studied under Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian where he learned painting en plein air along with techniques that led him to practice a more Impressionistic style. Gasser returned to New York in 1893 and shared a studio with fellow Impressionist John Henry Twachtman. It was then that he exhibited at the National Academy of Design. Gasser died prematurely at age 51 and consequently, his work fell into obscurity. However, due to a recent revival of interest in American Impressionism, Gasser's work has received renewed attention.
