David Hockney ( B. 1937 ) is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. He is an important contributor to The Pop Art Movement of the 1960's. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of The 20th Century. His artworks have commanded greater popular acclaim than any other Contemporary British artist. The Pop Art Expressionist style artworks have been the subject of more than 400 solo exhibitions. Art works by Hockney are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
On a visit to The Tyler Printmaking Studio of the accomplished Contemporary master printer Kenneth E. Tyler in 1978, Hockney discovered paper pulp. After some experimentation he found that he could pigment and " paint " with this medium. The " Paper Pools " are a group of 95 paper pulp works created during a three month period of collaboration in 1978. Hockney concentrated on the Tyler swimming pool, he photographed, sketched, and studied it. Recording the water's light qualities and they changed. During the project Tyler, directed by Hockney mixed hundreds of gallons of pigmented pulp. The result was some of David Hockney's most unique and iconic artworks.
This Paper Pools book, as well as reproducing the series of artworks in color offset lithography printing ( with numerous line drawings and polaroid photographs that served as studies ), contains Hockney's vivid and humorous account of how he came to create these intriguing artworks and meeting the challenge presented by an unfamiliar medium. The Paper Pools works have been hailed not only as a landmark departure point for Hockney but as a genuine tour de force.
