Artist Biography
Frans Smeers (1873 - 1960) was active/lived in Belgium.He is known for Figure painting, genre. Studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Jean-François Portaels and Joseph Stallaert . One of the founding members of the " Le Sillon " Circle, for which he designed the posters for the sixth and seventh Salons ( Brussels , 1899 & 1900).Member of the Belgian National Council of Visual Arts (CNAP).He taught from 1933 to 1946 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels , where his students included Germaine Chardon , Fernande Christophe , Benoît Gilsoul , Jean-Pierre De Maertelaer , George Lambillotte , Nicolas de Staël , Gilberte Thomas , Médard-Siegfried Tytgat , and Maurice Wyckaert.
In 1953, he received the René Steens Prize.Elected a corresponding member of the Royal Academy Belgium , theJuly 1 , 1954 ; member, theJuly 5, 1956.He lived mainly in the Brussels region (in Brussels itself, in Ixelles and Saint-Gilles ), but stayed from 1915 to 1919 in London and then in the Netherlands .He painted numerous portraits, including those of fellow painters and his family: his wife and four daughters. A lover of nature, he was often inspired by the landscapes of the North Sea , particularly those of Nieuport and Ostend .
