A rare, documented 1973 Model 7500 lighted étagère by Modeline of California — one of the company’s most striking sculptural designs from the early 1970s. Classified by collectors as part furniture, part architectural lighting, this piece combines bent-birch construction with a suspended illuminated globe to create a dramatic circular silhouette.
This example includes verified provenance:
• The original Modeline Co., Inc. UL-listed socket label remains intact.
• 2clearly legible factory date stamps of JUL 20 1973 are present on the underside.
Documented production pieces with both identifiers are exceptionally scarce.
Design Details
• Dramatic circular frame in bent birch with a subtly tapered profile
• Satin-glass globe pendant suspended inside the arc
• Three-level foot-switch dimmer (low / medium / bright)
• Standard E26 socket — compatible with modern smart bulbs (tested with Philips Hue)
• Full-span shelf ideal for books, ceramics, and sculptural objects
• Functions beautifully as an illuminated console, entry statement, or room divider
Provenance Note
The combination of the UL Modeline socket label and the 1973 date stamp confirms manufacturer provenance and period accuracy. This is one of the most fully documented examples of the Model 7500 to reach the market.
Why We Love It
Large-format sculptural pieces by Modeline rarely surface, and this model — often attributed to designer Jack Haywood — represents the pinnacle of California-Modern experimentation with form and illumination. The interplay of the circular frame, floating shelf, and glowing orb gives the piece an architectural presence that feels both futuristic and warm.
