Initialed lower left, 'A.S.' for Anton Schroder (Danish, 1893-1965) and dated 1953.
A charming and substantial, modernist study of a young woman shown seated and gazing to her left with an expression of gentle amusement.
Anton Schroder first studied at the Kolding Technical School before attending the Copenhagen Royal Art Academy (He was the recipient of several prestigious scholarships, including the Carlsen Prize (1926) and the Bielke Prize (1928), that allowed him to travel and continue his studies abroad, including in Paris, Munich, Dresden, Norway and Belgium.
Over the course of a long career, Schroder exhibited widely and with success, including at the Charlottenborg Museum (1921), the Brooklyn Museum (1927), The Art Forum (1929) and, on many occasions, at Copenhagen's Royal Academy. In addition to his work as an easel painter of subjects that included landscapes, still-lives and figurative paintings, Schroder was a sought-after society portraitist, a print-maker and also received several large-scale, state commissions for public murals and frescoes. We are pleased to offer Schroder's light-hearted, yet psychologically penetrating, study of this charming young woman.
