Striking contemporary raku-fired vase by American ceramic artist Mark Hines, known for his sculptural, organic forms and mastery of raku glazing. This hand-thrown piece features a bold, torn-edge collar and a full, rounded body with a deeply textured surface. The glaze reveals a subtle interplay of smoky beige, celadon green, and turquoise copper tones, highlighted by natural crackle lines that result from the rapid cooling process of traditional raku firing.
The firing technique, adapted from Japanese tradition, produces unpredictable variations in color and texture, making each work by Hines a one-of-a-kind object of art. This particular vase exemplifies his signature balance between control and spontaneity — earthy yet luminous, rugged yet refined.
Signed on the base “MHines 86” and dated 2-21-20.
