This dramatic, vertical artifact is a museum-worthy piece of Primitive Treenware, likely crafted by the Naga tribes of Northeast India (Nagaland). Estimated to be 19th to early 20th Century, this tall, slender container was meticulously hand-carved from a single log of dense, native hardwood—a testament to the incredible skill and labor of the artisan. Historically, these containers (often called rice or grain bins) were essential to communal life, reflecting the wealth and status of the family. The pronounced, dark, near-black surface has a profound, deep oxidized patina developed over a century of ritual handling and being placed over cooking fires, giving it an unmatched, raw texture known in design circles as Brutalist Chic.
Due to its impressive 2-foot height, this vessel is ideally positioned as a Primitive Floor Vase or a sculptural statement piece. It introduces an essential layer of cultural depth to Minimalist, Wabi-Sabi, or Japandi interiors.
Use it as a Grand Floor Vase: Place it in a living area corner, entryway, or beside a low console to create crucial vertical interest. Fill the deep well with long-stemmed, textural elements like dried grasses, magnolia branches (as shown), or tall feather plumes. Its vertical dominance ensures it is the first thing people notice in a room.
