A striking vintage Tanba-yaki (丹波焼) stoneware vase from Tachikui, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan — one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. This hand-thrown piece features a beautifully balanced form with a narrow flared neck and a subtly waisted body.
The surface showcases a rich iron-brown tenmoku glaze that transitions into flowing ash-glaze “biidoro” drips in creamy celadon and ivory tones. These natural glaze runs result from the wood-firing process typical of Tanba kilns, where ash melts onto the surface to create spontaneous glassy effects. The unglazed base reveals the characteristic sandy Tanba clay and bears the incised mark “丹波の作” (Tanba-no-saku), translating to “Made in Tanba.”
A fine example of Japan’s mingei (folk craft) tradition, this piece embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi — beauty in imperfection and natural process. Ideal for display as a sculptural art object or as a vase for minimalist floral arrangements.
