This antique Chinese wedding cabinet features a red lacquered finish on the front with hand-painted, gilt gold faded depictions of a court scene on the doors, similar to a toile print found on fine porcelain china, but on a much larger scale. The framework around the doors features a similarly faded floral motif. The natural, rustic patina reveals layers of materials, time, and construction that are impossible to replicate in something newer.
Large bronze or brass rectangular plate with ring pulls sits front and center as the only metal on this armoire. The doors are fixed on large wooden pins or hinges, which is telling of its age and hand-hewn construction. The sides and top are finished in a rich, dark walnut-colored stain. The cabinet is estimated to be 19th Century Qing by research and made of elmwood.
Inside, one heavy original shelf crosses the top third of the cavity. We have added a second, removable shelf that sits atop the lower crossbars of the wardrobe 'floor' so that items of weight can be stored below with confidence. The clearance beneath the cabinet apron and side stretchers is tall enough for shoe storage or a shallow basket.
This functional statement piece would work well in an entryway, foyer, bedroom or living room where extra, hidden storage is desired.
