A tour de force of the Second Empire Style, circa 1852–1870, this credenza represents a time when French design was characterized by richness of inspiration and materials for newly wealthy industrialists.
The serpentine front features curved glass display sections on the sides and a central cabinet door. This shape was considered particularly fine and was often used in high-quality pieces.
The primary wood has been stained black to imitate expensive ebony, a hallmark technique of the era that created a striking contrast with gilded elements abundant in this piece.
Gilt bronze mounts, or ormolu, are joined by the decorative trim around the doors, the columns flanking the central panel, and the base. Additional gold elements include the intricate inlay forming elaborate leaf and flower motifs. This style of inlay is often referred to as "Boulle" work, a revival of a 17th-century technique. Lastly, the velvet-lined interior caps this piece’s luxury status. Aren’t you getting bored with stainless steel?
