Red Antique Khotan Hallway Runner Wool Rug, Country of Origin: East Turkestan, Circa Date: 1800s. This exceptional piece represents the sophisticated weaving tradition of East Turkestan, often categorized under East Turkestan rugs due to the strong imperial influence on design. The deep, saturated red field color provides a striking canvas for the dense, repeating motifs characteristic of the region.

The composition features an intricate allover pattern of stylized florets, geometric medallions, and subtle lattice work, creating a visually rich texture that avoids a central medallion. Its elongated structure defines it as a superb hallway runner, ideally suited for grand corridors or narrow gallery spaces where its length can be fully appreciated.

Woven entirely in wool, the pile exhibits the characteristic patina of age, softening the original vibrancy of the dyes. The dominant ground hue is a rich, earthy red, beautifully complemented by secondary accents of pale indigo, ivory, and ochre—a masterful use of the red color palette that speaks to the high quality of 19th-century dyestuffs.

The complex, angular border frames the field with classical Chinese motifs, including stylized cloud bands and geometric key patterns, providing a crisp contrast to the busy field. This Khotan runner is a rare and highly collectible example, embodying the enduring artistry found within the finest antique rugs of the Silk Road region. See less
