Signed lower right 'Schyl' for Jules Schyl (Danish, 1893-1977); additionally signed, verso, and dated 1952.
This pioneer of Fauvism in Sweden worked as a painter, graphic artist and printmaker. Schyl's work is characterized by vibrant primary and secondary colors, often broken down into prismatic planes.
His painting media included oil, watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite, chalk, drypoint engraving, etching, and lithography. His subjects were landscapes, urban scenes, still life, portraits, figures, nudes and genre.
Schyl first studied at Althin's painting school in Stockholm (c.1914-1917) and the Danish Arts Academy in Copenhagen (1917-1919) where he studied under Godfred Rode and Julius Paulsen. He travelled frequently including to Germany (1914), France and Italy (1921), France and Spain (1924), Paris (1933, 1934) and Holland and Belgium (1938). He was a co-founder of the artist groups The Twelve (1924) and Aurora (1928). He exhibited with The Twelve in Copenhagen, Denmark (1924); in Malmo (1924, 1926, 1934, 1944); in Helsingborg, Sweden (1930); and in Ystad, Sweden (1949). He exhibited with Aurora in Lund, Sweden (1928, 1932, 1936, 1944, 1951, 1953, 1958); in Malmo (1929, 1938, 1941, 1943, 1948, 1953); in Norrkoping, Sweden (1933); Stockholm (1935); Ystad (1942, 1954); Helsingborg (1949); and in Motala, Sweden (1952). In addition to these groups, Schyl exhibited with the General Art Association Spring Exhibition in Stockholm (1917); the Young Swedish Artists traveling show (1930-1931); the Exhibition of Skane Art (3) at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (1946); and at numerous other exhibitions as late as the 1960s.
Schyl's work is held in the permanent collections of public and private museums including the Museum of Modern Art (Stockholm), Malmo Museum, the Art Gallery of Vikingsberg (Helsingborg), and the University Art Gallery
(Lund).
The artist is well listed in all relevant art reference works including Benezit's Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs (1999) and in the dictionary of Swedish artists Svenskt Konstnars Lexikon (1967). He is also the subject of Solveig Mansfeld's comprehensive study entitled SCHYL - Jules Schyl:1883-1977 (1990), published by Kalejdoskop Förlag (Åhus).
