Signed lower right, 'Kunffy' for Lajos Kunffy (Hungarian, 1869-1962); additionally titled, verso, 'Budapest 1942, A váci utca ...'
A Hungarian winter landscape showing a birds-eye view of Budapest's Váci Street on a snowy day.
Born in Hungary, Lajos Kunffy studied law in Budapest while training as an artist at the Mintarajziskola and under Pál Vágó. In 1890, he furthered his studies at Simon Hollósy's painting school in Munich, followed, in 1891, by six months at the Munich Academy. Later that year, he enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris, graduating in 1894.
Kunffy exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1894 and at the 1900 Millennium Exhibition in Budapest. After also successfully exhibiting at the Kunsthalle in Budapest in 1900, he married pianist Ella Tiller in 1901 and they moved to Paris where he painted for the following twelve years. In 1903, he was elected to the jury of the Salon d'Automne and, in 1905, was awarded the Legion of Honor for his services to art. A major solo exhibition at the Georges Petit Gallery in Paris followed in 1913.
Returning to Hungary, Kunffy exhibited at the National Salon in 1924 and was appointed vice president of the Fine Arts Association. He exhibited independently in Kaposvár in 1949 and 1952, and with Oszkár Glatz at the Ernst Museum in Budapest in 1953. A solo exhibition at the Rippl-Rónai Museum followed in 1956, and his final major exhibition was mounted at the Ernst Museum in 1960. Lajos Kunffy is well-listed in all relevant art reference works Including Benezit's Dictionary of Painters and Thieme-Becker.
