A rather unique Dutch School portrait of a privateer, circa 1780.
Gold hoop earrings fell in and out of vogue over the 17th and early 18th centuries, especially amongst privateers and merchants who owed ther success to the pirate economy.
Their presence here indicates that the work was pained between the years spanning the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784)
