An elegant Japanese late Meiji period hokkai, or picnic box. Crafted of black lacquer, and decorated in copper mounts. The body shaped as a series of stacked rings. Four legs run up the sides of the body, and are embellished with copper mounts. Thick braided rope serve as the carrying handles, with blue and white decorative porcelain beads.
Shows some age wear but in very nice condition for it's age.
One of the copper mounts on the lid is missing.
A chip on the top. Almost looks like the lid was dropped before.
It is still a very remarkable piece and wonderful condition for it's time
