Summary
Hand-thrown Chinese cylinder vase in a deep sang de boeuf (oxblood) copper red glaze. The glaze presents a rich, layered red with subtle mottling and a pale olive halo at the lip—hallmarks of prized 20th‑century transmutation reds. A compact, architectural silhouette with a flared mouth makes this an elegant, display‑ready accent for modern or traditional rooms.
Dating and Background
Republic period, circa 1935. The vase shows several diagnostic traits associated with Republican‑era copper‑red production: a thick, glassy application with fine 'orange‑peel' surface, an olive‑green reduction halo at the mouth, and an oxidized, straw‑colored ring at the unglazed foot where kiln gases burned against the clay. These effects are produced by copper oxides in a reducing kiln atmosphere and were intentionally sought by Republican kilns reviving Qing dynasty flambé and oxblood traditions. The restrained, cylindrical bottle form is consistent with 1920s–40s workshop output made for domestic and export markets.
Collector Notes
• Desirable period copper‑red with even, saturated tone and lively depth.
• Evident reduction halo and oxidation ring—useful dating markers for Republic‑era wares.
• Practical size (about 11½ inches tall) for shelves, mantels, or console vignettes.
• A strong companion piece to monochrome glazes (celadon, sang‑de‑boeuf, flambé) and to scholar’s objects.
Decorating Ideas
Let the oxblood read as a luxurious neutral: group with celadon and cream porcelains for a layered monochrome, or place singly on a dark wood stand. The compact cylinder is excellent on bookcases, in entry consoles, or centered on a fireplace mantel. Pairs beautifully with brass, black lacquer, and natural linens.

Condition
Excellent vintage condition. No cracks, chips, or repairs observed. As‑made artifacts typical of period production include occasional pinpoint glaze gaps and a faint orange‑peel texture. Expected shelf wear to the unglazed foot rim; thick, glossy glaze with attractive olive halo at the mouth and a natural oxidation ring at the base.
