Richly sculptural antique French majolica wine chiller dating to the turn of the 20th century. This cylindrical earthenware vessel features a high-relief cluster of hand sculpted deep cobalt-blue/deep violet grapes with green and ochre leaves, applied against a warm yellow-glaze. The form is completed with a rolled rim and integrated side handles. In the interior, the natural terracotta color is visible beneath the glaze.
The bottom indicates its country of origin “France.” Though difficult to read, the body of the cooler is impressed with a maker’s mark; possibly the letters “FAV,” consistent with export-period French barbotine production of the late 19th to early 20th century. Both decorative and functional, this piece may be used as a wine or champagne chiller or statement vase.
A classic example of French vineyard-themed pottery, well suited to country French, Art Nouveau, or traditional interiors.
