The background is done in … Read more This outstanding Mid-Century needlepoint picture features sunflowers that really pop on the dark green background. The background is done in the traditional tent stitch (continental stitch variation), but the stitch count per inch is smaller than we usually see in more common needlepoint, which often uses a 10-stitch-per-linear-inch canvas, and the background is nice and flat. Another special characteristic of this sunflower needlepoint is that the maker used a variety of stitches, such as brick stitch for the petals and French knots for the centers of the sunflowers. I see no skipped stitches or other flaws in this wonderful needlepoint.

The sunflowers needlepoint, which measures 27 inches high has a vertical orientation. It has a width of 13.25 inches. The vintage frame is gilt wood with designs around the outer and inner edges. The back of the frame is a panel of wood. The frame has a few dings as we would normally see on a picture frame that's decades old, as this one is. There's a wire on the back for hanging. With the wood frame and wood panel in back, this piece is relatively heavy, so it should be hung with care.

A beautiful vintage piece of needle art, this sunflowers picture is several levels up from run-of-the-mill hobbyist work as it was obviously done by a very skilled needle artist.
