This exceptional pair of Queen Anne carved walnut compass-seat side chairs, made in Philadelphia between 1740 and 1760, represents some of the finest craftsmanship of early American furniture. Both chairs have distinguished provenance tracing to Dr. Thomas Graeme (1688–1772) of Graeme Park in Horsham, Pennsylvania. The needlework-upholstered example descended through the Graeme, Penrose, and Twining families before passing through Sotheby’s and Christie’s sales, ultimately selling for $40,000 at Christie’s in 2013. The pink-upholstered chair descended through Dr. Graeme’s lineage to Mrs. J. Insley Blair (Natalie Knowlton) and the Lorillard family, later selling for $50,000 at Christie’s in 2017. The pair, notable for their provenance, condition, and original upholstery, sold together to a private collector for $270,600. They exemplify the refined Philadelphia design tradition and relate closely to comparable examples associated with the Francis Rawle family and discussed in Alan Miller’s American Furniture (2014), as well as similar chairs held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
