These excellently hand-carved wooden 19th Century Italian angel cherub sconces were done in the traditional Renaissance style. During the Renaissance period, cherub and angel figural carvings were quite popular. The Italian artist, Raphael created characters called “putti,” which looked like male babies or toddlers, with wings or without. The depiction of chubby, young children as cherubs came from the observation of the relationship between toddlers and their parents. The innocence of children, along with their capacity to provide an abundant amount of joy and love to their parents led to the interpretation which is still enduringly popular today.
They are carved out of linden wood and have acquired a rich patina from age. The dark wood contrasts with the gilt gesso wings that shimmer when lit. In this pair, one cherub is facing left and holding the candle on the right while the other cherub is facing right and holding the candle on the left. The serene cherubs gaze at each other while inviting us to gaze at them and will certainly draw attention to the wall on which they are mounted.

Originally made for candles, the sconces have been modified for electrical use. The sconces have been rewired to meet United States electrical standards. Each sconce takes one candelabra light bulb that can take a maximum of 60 watts. We recommend using LED lights because they help preserve antique fixtures longer. Antique sconces need to be adapted to modern houses. Please check with your electrician or contractor for additional specifics on how to install antique wall sconces. These sconces are carved out of Linden wood also known as lime wood. They have a rich patina from age and have been recently waxed. They are not entirely one piece and have parts that are connected. There are a few small nicks, small chips, and separations in the wood (see images). These have no missing pieces (including all their fingers and toes). Although structurally sound, they are fragile and parts can break off if not packed properly. Like picture frames, they have a metal hook on the back for hanging. Dimensions of each sconce: H= 19 in. W= 17 in. D= 7 in. Weight= 4 lbs., Total weight of 8 lbs.
