The image of Henry the VIII and his future bride dominate the foreground. They are dressed in traditional aristocratic Tudor garb and headwear, and Henry VIII has a golden dagger resting on his lap. The lady's gown is of a rich coral satin. They are being serenaded by a court musician dressed all in red, giving him an almost devilish appearance. A large lute rests against a plum colored cushioned stool. Groups of courtiers fill the right half of the composition, and their positioning and facial expressions indicate the festive nature of the gathering. The scene appears to be set on a terrace or courtyard with a low wall and stone balustrade. There is an urn of fruit on the low wall and large bowl with wine jugs in front of the balustrade. Unframed, mounted on a stretcher. A striking piece, suitable for a large space. Provenance: Marlboro Inn, Montclair, NJ. See less
