This large 23-inch decorative charger represents a fine example of monumental Soviet studio ceramics, created by a professional artist during the late 20th century in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The piece combines both painted slip and glazed relief decoration to achieve a complex visual and tactile composition.
The central medallion features a stylized solar motif surrounded by processional figures, animals, and ornamental scrollwork executed in high relief. The selective glazing—applied over the terracotta surface—adds depth and contrast to the richly detailed figures. The use of mixed techniques required multiple firings and precise temperature control to prevent cracking, making works of this scale technically challenging and rare.
This artistic approach aligns with the broader movement in Soviet Central Asian art of the 1970s–1980s, when artists sought to merge local mythological themes with modernist design principles. Similar works were exhibited at All-Union Decorative Art exhibitions in Moscow during this period.
Comparable large-scale mixed-technique ceramics from the Central Asian republics are highly valued for their technical complexity and rarity. Auction results for similar works range between $4,000 and $7,000, depending on condition, regional attribution, and artistic detail.
This magnificent plate is priced to sell, significantly below the appraised value. The appraisl is available upon request
