Biedermeier furniture is immediately recognizable in its simple elegance. Coming to fruition as a direct response to previous neoclassical and romantic styles that were popular among the upper classes in the 18th century, this new design style shifted the needle away from ormolu-heavy, grandeur. What emerged post Napoleonic Wars was a strong preference for clean, geometric lines. Little to no inlay decorates Biedermeier style furniture. Instead, heavy emphasis is placed on unique burl or grain patterns and striking contrasts of wood colors. This period of furniture making and artistry placed more value in the everyday, common life than ever before. The early to mid 1800s heralded the birth of the true "middle class" and for the first time in modern history, an average person could afford fine furniture.
Elegant yet funky, Biedermeier furniture blends seamlessly into nearly every home decor style. Its clean geometric lines and stunning wood contrasts and patterns bridge the gap of both masculine and feminine styles. This is why the style has had several resurgences in more recent history, particularly in the 1960s. It often leans very "vintage" in its look, often seeming almost modern in its design.
This stunning vintage (mid to late 20th century) Italian Biedermeier revival bench is a fine example of such a piece. A blend of sharp, clean lines make up the body of this settee, with stunning burl highlighted by ebonized detailing. The canned seat is in superb condition, with no punctures or warping. This would be perfect in an entry way or hall!
