About the artist:
A popular Canadian painter and former advertising executive, Terry Tomalty was born in Montreal (Verdun) and still lives in the environs of Montreal (St. Bruno). His primary medium is oil paint. His subjects include street scenes, landscapes, rural scenes, still life, sports (lots of hockey at all skill levels), children, public events and genre*. Snow is a common feature in many of his works. His style is Fauvism*. The askART auction results have many excellent illustrations of his work.
Tomalty describes himself as “completely self-taught”; however, a few sources note that his art education includes correspondence courses from the Famous Artists School*, Westport, Connecticut from 1955 to 1958. Before becoming a fulltime painter (in the 1990s) Tomalty held several positions at the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency: art director, senior art director and vice-president.
Quote: “School had no interest for me and I left at age 16 and became an apprentice in an art studio.”
His paintings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions at prominent commercial galleries such as Continental Galleries, Montreal (solo 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1988); Kastel Gallery, Montreal (solo 1998); Galerie Gauvreau, Montreal; Roberts Gallery, Toronto; Victoria Art Gallery, Toronto; and The Art Emporium, Vancouver.
His works are avidly collected; they are also in numerous corporate collections such as The Royal Bank, The Swiss Bank, The Colorado Rockies, The Chicago Blackhawks, The National Hockey League, The Montreal Canadiens, The Quebec Nordiques, Rolland Paper Company, Domtar, Canada Steamship Lines, and SNC-Lavalin.
