About the artist:
Hope was born July 22, 1939, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her family moved to Palo Alto, California, during World War II, where her father worked at Moffett Field and later for Borg Warner. After the war, her family relocated to Mexico City where her father and grandmother founded MORESA, an automotive parts manufacturing business. Upon graduating from the American School, Hope attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, where she planned to study architecture. It was there that she met and married Ronald Lee Stevenson, Hope later completed her education in 1970 earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Hope taught art and Spanish for 10 years at the junior high and high school levels in Eaton, Colorado. It was really after her children, Mark and Brian, had graduated from high school and college and left home that Hope embarked on her remarkable career as a professional artist. She began showing her work in Colorado and later in galleries in California, including Carmel and Laguna Beach. As Hope's career gathered momentum, she and Ron moved to a home that Hope designed just outside of Mendocino where she showed her work at the Highlight Gallery and the Mendocino Art Center. Over the next 20 years, she became one of the better known and accomplished artists in Mendocino. While her talent crossed a variety of media, she was best known for her plein air work in landscapes with a palette knife. Hope also taught private lessons and group seminars and classes at the Mendocino Art Center and in various locales in Hawaii, Bermuda and Europe. During their years in Mendocino, Hope and Ron traveled extensively, doing house swaps for a month or more at a time with families from France, Spain, England and the Netherlands.
Hope continued to paint and teach classes in Mendocino after her diagnosis of Alzheimers, but in 2008 she and her family determined that a move to Portland, Oregon, where her sons lived with their families would be most beneficial for her long-term health. Hope discovered a plein air painting group in the Portland area and shifted the focus of her painting to landscapes in the Pacific Northwest.
