Thomas Cole was one of the greatest landscape painters of the early nineteenth century and a pioneer of the American landscape painting tradition. Cole was born in Bolton, Lancashire in February 1801. During this period, he witnessed the destruction of natural resources brought about by the rapid industrial revolution, so his paintings are mostly beautiful natural scenery.
