A refined example of Kyoto Satsuma art pottery, this tripod koro incense burner was created by the respected Kotobuki-dō workshop in Japan during the late Meiji period (c. 1890). Its distinctive low, wide silhouette with three raised feet gives it a sculptural presence on display, while the warm ivory crackle glaze introduces subtle depth and texture admired in the finest Satsuma ware.
The surface is richly hand-painted with two elegant bijin in patterned kimono strolling through a riverside garden of pavilions and trees — a classic expression of elite Meiji aesthetics. The decoration employs raised gilding and soft enamel colours, creating micro-relief detailing that catches the light beautifully. A sharp geometric border in gold and iron-red frames the neck, lending structure to the composition and balancing the organic movement below.
Signed with a gilded Kotobuki-dō mark to the underside, this is a highly collectible work from a distinguished Kyoto atelier. Compact in scale yet rich in artistry, it is ideal as an accent piece within a curated contemporary interior, where its cultural sophistication and handcrafted quality will stand out.
