Mid-Century Handwoven Aubusson-Style Fruit and Floral Tapestry Rug — 8’2.5” × 11’3.25”
Evoking the grandeur of classic French Aubusson tapestries, this exquisite handwoven rug brings centuries of artistry into a refined mid-century interpretation. Crafted in Belgium or France circa 1940s–1950s, it features a richly detailed composition of fruit and florals arranged in flowing Baroque scrollwork against a deep, muted ground. Every element—ripened grapes, peonies, tulips, and acanthus leaves—has been rendered with remarkable dimension and nuance through subtle tonal shading.
The piece is woven entirely by hand in fine wool on a cotton warp, using the traditional tapestry (flatweave) technique for which the Aubusson and Tournai workshops are renowned. A narrow woven border frames the scene with graceful continuity, and the reverse reveals the expected open weave structure and hand-stitched cotton edge tape, faintly inscribed by the original workshop.
This substantial 8’2.5” × 11’3.25” textile works beautifully as a floor covering or as a wall-hung tapestry in rooms that embrace historical elegance, Parisian romance, or eclectic European layering. The palette—sage green, coral, ochre, ivory, shades of blue and a bit of charcoal—harmonizes effortlessly with both traditional and modern interiors, grounding a space with warmth and quiet sophistication.
