James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was one of the first American artists to gain an international reputation. His etchings are notable for their well-designed interplay of filled and unfellied space. This print, listed as N. 23 in Kennedy's definitive catalogue, is signed "Whistler" and dated 1858 in the place by the artist. This print is from the fifth state. The plate has been destroyed.
